Come Join Bat Biologist Bernice Tannenbaum at Kittitas Environmental Education Network (KEEN) for the 26th annual Get Intimate with the Shrub-Steppe (GISS)—a community event celebrating the rare and endangered shrub-steppe habitat of Central Washington. Friday night Bernice will be doing a Bat Walk, and then on Saturday, Come by our table, which is one of the Hands-on Science Booths at the Yakima Canyon Interpretive Center from 9:00AM-1:00PM, especially if you have any specific Bat questions that didn’t get answered the night before.

Bats on the Farm

The Bellevue Parks & Community Service’s are having us out for a Bat walk and presentation at Kelsey Creek Farm in Bellevue. Come discover bats and the importance they play in ecology. After dusk scan the sky above the farm and use a bat detector to see and hear the resident bats. Registration opens on April 7 at 12PM for this event, appropriate for teenager and adults.

2025 Western Washington Forest Owners’ Winter School

Sharpen your forestry education with this all day multiple workshop Winter School. Bats Northwest will be leading a class discussion on WA bats. Winter School allows you to attend six classes out of 23 classes to choose from ranging from address challenges on your property, restore healthy forest conditions, and achieve your goals. Whether you are a novice to family forestry, or your family has owned land for many generations, there is something new for everyone to learn. The registration fee is $20 per individual or $30 per couple from the same household/ownership. Youth under 18 are welcome and may attend at no additional cost. Come on down to Seattle’s Carkeek Park to see us at our table at the Piper Creek Salmon Celebration. Reports from event organizers is that there is a Bonker number of Salmon this year in the creek! Piper’s Creek in Carkeek Park is home to one of Seattle’s most viewer-friendly salmon runs. The event celebrate their homecoming with snacks and hot drinks, music and dance performance, a salmon scavenger hunt for kids, activity booths,& “Bert the Salmon”. Join Barbara Ogaard of Bats Northwest and her friends of the night at the Adopt A Stream Foundation’s Northwest Stream Center on the evening of Saturday October 12th.

Barb is know as the Bat Lady. She rehabilitates injured bats for the Sarvey Wildlife Care Center and is a researcher for us. Live bats from Sarvey will also be part of the presentation, along with incredible photo images of bats from around the world and some very cool bat puppets!

Bat Night at Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands

The Tilth Alliance is hosting its' annual Bat Night at Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands!

Come join us for a night of fun and educational night about bats followed up with Woodland Park Zoo Bat Activity Trends (BAT) community science program and how you can help learn more about bats in Seattle.

  • 6 p.m. — We will start with a family friendly activity.

  • 6:30 p.m. — Educational talk on bats covering adaptations, behavior and biology.

  • 7 p.m. — Instructions for the BAT community science project and a 30-minute bat observation. 

Please wear appropriate shoes, and we recommend bringing bug spray and a headlamp. No RSVP necessary.

Union Bay Natural Area Bat Walk

We are teaming up with the University of Washington Botanical Gardens and Woodland Park Zoo at the Union Bay Natural Area to learn about Washington's amazing bat species, and take part in Woodland Park Zoo's new community science program, Bat Activity Trends! Bats are a common wildlife species across Washington state, including urban areas, but their nocturnal habits mean that people often don’t notice them. Taking the time to learn how to observe bats can change that!

The night begins with a lecture and then end with bat observation. The program is $10 and advance registration is required.

Swifts Night Out in Monroe

Bats Northwest is joining in on the annual celebration of Vaux’s Swift migration in Monroe on September 7th. From 4:30pm until dusk, Come join other nature lovers, community groups, families, and anyone with an interest in the spectacular can enjoy an evening on the lawn to watch the Vaux’s Swifts descend into their evening chimney roost at the school. While waiting for the swifts to appear around sunset possibly also with some of our NW bats, there will be our booth and children’s activities, vendor booths, and a presentation available in the Wagner Center Auditorium.

We are partnering with the Wenatchee River Institute and Washington Fish & Wildlife for a night of bat education at Nason Creek in Leavenworth. WDFW biologists will be using mist-net to show you a bat up close, there will be educational activities and Bats Northwest will have a table and fun activities at this event. Must be registered in advance and will be required to wear an KN95 mask. The event has minimal walking required and has no bathroom onsite. Need to bring a headlamp or flashlight.
